Retrievers Specialty Show (01.02.2003) judge Marilyn Nightingale’s letter
When asked to do the Retriever Club Show in Estonia I was a little apprehensive about the quality & quantity I would find. I should not have been at all apprehensive; the depth of quality and the quantity was there. I will say that there are some problems that can be sorted very easily and quickly because you have the time to.
The problems I found are really problems that you have inherited from other breeders and can be sorted easily and within one generation. Some exhibits lacked stop and work in the head, a Labrador should have a well defined stop. A good width of skull but not over done, most exhibits were not over done, just the opposite, not enough work in the head. Ear placement should not be perched on top of the head, but set well and not too heavy in ear.
The other problem in this area was round eyes, a Labrador should have almond shaped eyes. This gives the soft expression, this is most important.
If you look at the dogs/bitches to improve in this and other areas then you will improve on true type. You are a young country in the exhibiting and breeding of Labradors, you have it in your power to improve quickly and easily on other peoples breeding faults. It is up to you as custodian’s of the breed in your country to breed to true type and temperament above anything else, if you breed a champion then all the best, but continue in the same way.
Another problem I found was lack of bone and true substance (NOT FAT); I like an exhibit with well rounded bone ~ not sharp angles. The other thing was lack of height in some exhibits, they should be balanced. So many were long and low creating an unbalanced picture, remember they are made for picking up and retrieving game. They should present a well balanced outline, almost box like in appearance.
Having pointed out these problems, I can assure you that you do have some very good exhibits. Do not be “kennel blind” to the fault’s you have in your own kennel, look to improve on future generations.
