Judge Mary Neil about the show and Golden Retrievers:
I was deeply honoured to be asked to judge at your show and very excited about my first visit to Estonia.
Saturday morning, after a long drive through your beautiful country, we came to the show venue which could not have been more perfect. It was lovely to have accommodation in stunning little chalets with the exhibitors also staying in the group of chalets. The surrounding area was stunning with lots of little lakes for the dogs to enjoy a dip.
The organisation of the show was faultless and the prizes were amazing. It was really good to be able to assess your dogs and be able to write my opinion on them. I think given the size of Estonia you are doing a great job with the breed and have some amazing dogs. You have similar faults to those we have in the UK but overall the standard of your dogs was excellent. There are a couple of very dominant kennels in Estonia and the standard of dogs being bred by them is of an extremely high standard.
Presentation of the dogs was exemplary and the temperament was perfect apart from one bitch who sadly growled at me and I had to dismiss her from the ring. We must strive to make temperament the most important consideration when we are breeding because without that sound, friendly, biddable temperament we do not have a Golden Retriever.
I was extremely happy with my placings and I gave BOB to a stunning 11 years old bitch Dunehill Miss Gigi At Terra Antyda who’s construction and movement should be a template that you all as breeders are striving to reproduce. This bitch was so soundly put together with lovely construction, sweet head and her movement was of a dog half her age.
Sunday was another exciting day for me as I was invited to accompany some dogs as they were examined on their hunting test. I found the methods taught very, very interesting and the assessor Riin was a very knowledgeable trainer and a very fair and competent examiner.
I found it particularly interesting how you teach these young dogs to use their natural hunting ability and make use of their biggest hunting asset their nose. It was a novel way of training for me but made perfect sense. I must congratulate the handlers of the dogs tested.
All of the dogs were show bred as Estonia has very few if any working bred Goldens. To watch them work and use their natural ability was such a pleasure for me.
Good luck for the future of your Club and for all your retrieving breeds. They are in good hands.
